Right Here, Right Now We all know, at least intellectually, that we will benefit from truly living in the moment. And yet, too often, we peer forward, planning for some distant, hypothetical future, attempting to frame a contingency for every possible scenario, organizing our lives around what might be. Either that, or we’re scrutinizing our history, relishing or loathing the past, living for a time that once was. I notice the formerâ€"the incessant looking forwardâ€"in some of my friends. And I often observe the latterâ€"looking backwardsâ€"in myself. (To be fair, I notice both traits in everyone.) Neither is conducive for an ideal life. With the people I love, we may be eating dinner, enjoying a concert, or just spending time together, and although the moment seems perfect, it can be tainted with the suggestion of “let’s do this again,” looking forward, as if now is not enough, as if we must plan, we must have more. This seems to be part of the human experience: no matter how great things are, it’s never enough. We always want more. Similarly, when I am personally comparing the present to the pastâ€"whenever I’m more concerned with what has happened than what is happeningâ€"this moment loses its beauty, its power, its virility. I’ve noticed, however, that there’s at least one occasion in which this doesn’t happen: when I’m driving alone in my car. Whenever I’m behind the wheel, I avoid both temptations. Instinctually I know I have to keep my eyes on the road and deal with whatever is on the other side of the windshield, here and now. If I daydream too long, starring off onto the horizon, or if I glue my eyes to the rearview mirror, taking in the scenery I’ve already passed, I’m going to crash. Sure, it’s fine to occasionally glance at the road behind us, just as it’s ideal to see what’s on the horizon from time to time, but we benefit most from negotiating the open road, everything that’s directly in front of us. Congratulations to Kenneth Fomunung for winning the ‘Best Social Media Influencer’ award at the Beauty Industry Awards Show Gala hosted by the Trish Hill Foundation earlier this year. We caught up with the American national, Hult London MBA Class of 2015 alum, entrepreneur, marketer, and published author to find out more. Why do you think you won this award? I think probably because I take the time to immerse myself in the experiences of my peers. And I understand the tastes of my fellow millennials and speak a language that resonates. Also, I am authentic in how I portray myself, both on- and offline. I think this is refreshing in the social media world, where perception is seldom reality. I’ve been working in Marketing and gone on to found my own digital marketing and consulting agency: Enrich My Brand. My MBA program and the entrepreneurial business challenge prepared me well for these experiences. And Hults soft skills focus vastly improved my discipline and my confidence in dealing with others and particularly senior management. Hults networking opportunities and real-world lessons enhanced my ability to face new challenges and network with diverse people. This is so valuable for running a startup and for client acquisition in the consulting space in which I currently operate. Moreover, I was HSA for my MBA cohort, an experience that further developed my leadership skills, which are critical to the success of any founding member of a company or managing partner. Hults soft skills focus vastly improved my discipline and my confidence in dealing with others and particularly senior management. What’s next for you? Well, I had quite a rollercoaster of a year in 2018 so Im enjoying the opportunity to reset and renew myself, both personally and professionally. dad had been hired at a company nearby, and Saline was said to be one of the best school districts in the state. At Saline, I grew in my love of reading and most everything else (expect for math), and the classes offered there challenged me to work hard. In high school, I enrolled in all the honors courses I could, taking math a year above the majority of my class and studying hard. My school offered many AP classes, and because of the classes I took there, I entered IUS in my first year as a sophomore according to my credits. No matter what, I know education is important to me and that I will continue in my education for many years. I’m good at school, though sometimes I worry that it’s not so much that I am intelligent than it is that I know how to give people what they want. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t expect to go to college. Though I never had any specific plans, I always knew that my education would take me to college. Considering my family, I ch oose to believe this mindset makes sense. My dad received his PhD (although belatedly), and my mom is currently pursuing her MSW. My dad’s side of the family has been going to college for at least three generations, but my mom was actually the first generation of college students on her side.
